POINTS & MILES

How points transfer bonuses work

A transfer bonus can give you more airline miles or hotel points for the bank rewards you move. More points are useful only if they help you book something you actually want.

Understand the base transfer ratio first

A transfer ratio describes how many partner points you receive for eligible bank points. Promotions may increase that amount for a specific partner and period. Check the normal ratio, your eligible account, the promotional ratio, registration requirements and the deadline in the actual offer. Not all points programs or card accounts have the same transfer options.

Do the arithmetic before the transfer

Hypothetical example: with a 1:1 base ratio and a 25% bonus, 20,000 bank points would become 25,000 partner points. If a redemption requires 25,000 partner points, the calculation is 25,000 ÷ 1.25 = 20,000 bank points. This example is not a live offer. Real programs can have minimum transfer amounts, increments, rounding rules and separate bonus-posting times.

Find the award before moving points

Search the program that will issue your ticket or hotel booking. Confirm the exact dates, route, cabin or room, number of travelers and total points needed. Check taxes, surcharges and cancellation rules too. A transfer promotion does not mean seats or rooms are available for your trip.

Check timing and whether the transfer is final

Review the issuer’s transfer instructions and partner conditions before confirming. For example, American Express says Membership Rewards transfers are final and recommends checking availability and the points required first. Do not assume points can be moved back to the bank if your plans change. Posting time and bonus timing vary; an award can disappear while you wait.

Compare the whole trip with the cash alternative

Illustration only: a $500 flight available for 25,000 partner miles plus $100 in taxes gives an avoided cash amount of $400. That works out to 1.6 cents per partner mile in this example. With the hypothetical 25% transfer bonus above, it uses 20,000 bank points, or 2 cents per bank point of avoided cash cost. Compare equivalent tickets, including baggage, refundability and restrictions; these are not guaranteed point values.

Be careful about transferring just for a promotion

A large percentage bonus does not make an unsuitable redemption worthwhile. Once rewards sit in a partner program, its rules, availability and future award pricing matter. If you do not have a usable booking in mind, consider whether keeping flexible bank points better fits your plans.

A five-question check before you confirm

Am I eligible for this promotion? Is the actual award available? Have I included all cash charges? Will the transfer and bonus arrive in time? Do I understand the final-transfer and cancellation rules? If any answer is unclear, pause and consult the original provider’s current terms.
