How to compare credit card welcome bonuses
The biggest number in a credit card promotion is only the start. The useful question is whether you qualify, can meet the terms through planned spending, and can use the rewards.
Start with the exact offer you can apply for
Welcome bonuses, also called sign-up or new-cardmember bonuses, can vary by application link, channel and applicant. Read the offer attached to your application rather than relying on an old screenshot. Record the bonus, qualifying purchase amount, spending window, annual fee and any advertised deadline. An offer with no published end date can still change.
Check eligibility before comparing points
Approval for a card and eligibility for its bonus are different questions. The issuer may consider current or previous card ownership, a previous bonus and other conditions. Read the current application terms. A headline bonus is not a promise that every applicant will receive it.
Fit the spending requirement around your plans
Work out the qualifying purchases you already expect to make during the issuer’s stated window. Check when the clock begins and which transactions are excluded. Do not count on cash advances, balance transfers, fees or other excluded activity toward a bonus. Returns can also affect qualifying spending; consult the actual terms.
Compare costs alongside rewards
Consider the annual fee, interest, other charges and any additional spending prompted by the offer. A bonus is less useful if you pay more to earn it than the rewards are worth to you. Do not treat travel credits as cash unless you would naturally use them and meet their restrictions. Plan to pay statement balances in full; interest can outweigh rewards.
Use a realistic redemption example
Illustration only: suppose 60,000 points can replace a $600 travel purchase you would otherwise make. That is 1 cent per point in this example, not a universal valuation. A $95 annual fee would reduce that illustrative first-year amount to $505 before interest, other costs and any separately valued benefits. A different redemption can produce a very different result.
Keep welcome bonuses and ongoing promotions separate
A new-cardmember bonus, an activated merchant offer, a category earning promotion and a points-transfer bonus are different opportunities. Each can have its own enrollment rules, eligible transactions and expiry. Do not assume two promotions stack unless both sets of terms allow it.
Keep a small offer checklist
Before applying, save the exact application offer and its terms. Record your eligibility check, opening date, qualifying-spend target and deadline. Track posted eligible purchases rather than a rough total, and confirm when the bonus is credited. Verify current information directly with the issuer if something is unclear.
Check the original sources
These issuer explanations support the general concepts in this guide. Your specific application or promotion terms control; confirm them before acting.
